Around Lake Boon
The lake was a summer colony before it filled with year-round homes. Damp air off the water and shade from the trees bring mildew sooner, so washing and primer choice matter.
Stow is home. Ed Norris has run Beacon Painting from here since spring 2000, close to Honey Pot Hill Orchards and Lake Boon.
Stow was mostly farm and orchard land until the 1950s, and you can still see it. Old farmhouses sit beside postwar capes and newer colonials, many on wooded lots with long driveways. The Assabet River runs through town, Lake Boon is lined with homes, and the orchards along the back roads still sell apples every fall. Painting here means working on everything from weathered clapboard to cedar shingle.
Because this is our own town, Ed is never far away. He walks every side of the house himself, writes the estimate out in detail so you can see each step, and once the crew starts he stops by each day to check the work. Around Stow that might mean exterior house painting on an old farmhouse, deck staining at a lake house, power washing a shaded north wall, or interior painting and cabinet painting once the weather turns cold.

The lake was a summer colony before it filled with year-round homes. Damp air off the water and shade from the trees bring mildew sooner, so washing and primer choice matter.

Farmhouses here often carry many layers of old paint. If yours was built before 1978, the prep has to be lead-safe, and Ed will explain how it's handled.

This village grew up around a mill on the Assabet and is mostly homes now. Houses near the river and wetlands see more moisture, which is hard on trim.

Ed is Beacon’s home base. Call him now.
Yes. Stow is where Beacon is based, and it's been home since spring 2000.
Mostly the prep. Layers of old paint, lead-safe work on wood painted before 1978, rotted boards that need replacing and the number of colors all add time. Ed walks the house and writes a detailed estimate, so you can see where the cost comes from.
Into early fall, often not. Exterior paint needs dry wood and temperatures above about 50°F while it dries, so Ed watches the overnight lows. After that, interior painting and cabinet work fill the colder months.
Stow has a Historical Commission but no local historic district, so a repaint doesn't normally need sign-off. Ask the town if you're unsure about your property.
The outdoor season is short, so call over the winter or early spring. Ed will tell you where he can fit you in.
Yes. Lake Boon homes are a good example of where a proper wash, mildew treatment and the right primer make the paint last.
